LOCAL SOCCER PLAYERS IN ACTION IN LIVERPOOL AND GLASGOW:
Local U-15 soccer players Ryan Curran and David O’Shea (St. Josephs) and Conor Byrne (Stretford) got an opportunity to play against the top teams in England and Scotland when the South East soccer academy embarked on a 3 match tour of the U.K. last week. The three boys were all in action in the first game on Monday last in Liverpool against the Everton U15 academy team coached by former Everton and Liverpool player Gary Ablett. The concession of an early penalty which was converted by Everton did not deter the South East team and a cracking goal from Stretford’s Steven Purcell mid way through the 2nd half secured a great draw for the Carlow-Kilkenny- Wexford combination. On the following day the squad were back in action in Parkhead in Glasgow against a superb Glasgow Celtic U16 academy team which was coached by former greats Tom Boyd and Tommy Burns. Celtic made most of the running in this game and despite being under intense pressure at times the South East team which once again included the Tinryland lads did well to restrict the famous Glasgow club to two goals at the final whistle.
After the exertions and travel of the first two days the third game of the tour turned out to be something of an anti climax as the academy team from Scottish premier division club Dunfermline defeated a tired South East squad 5-0.
