Four St. Joseph’s AFC Under 14 Players acquitted themselves very well at the 16th Euro Cup International Football Tournament in Hamont, Belgium over the weekend. The Carlow and District League team remained unbeaten against English, Belgian and Dutch opposition in the group stages and eventually reached the final after defeating a Dutch side on penalties in a nerve-wracking semi-final. In the final the Carlow team came up against top Belgian side Bocholt which contained a number of underage internationals. After Carlow conceded two goals, Conor Byrne replied with a goal to narrow the margin with 10 minutes remaining. In Carlow’s quest for an equalizer however, the Belgians scored once more to win 3-1. The other St. Joseph’s players on this team were Ryan Curran and David O’Shea. Padraig Whelan was also prominent on the Carlow No. 2 team which won 2 matches and finished 13th overall.
