GAA President Liam O’Neill opens Tinryland Floodlit pitch
There was a great turnout for the visit of GAA president Liam O’Neill at the official opening of Tinryland’s floodlit pitch on Saturday evening May 4th. On a day blessed with fine weather the president who hails from Laois unveiled photographs on the club wall of fame of former Tinryland Co. GAA secretaries James Brophy and Tommy O’Neill. Tinryland committee member John Scott gave a very interesting talk on the careers of both men. This part of the proceedings which began the clubs 125 year celebrations was attended by members of the Brophy and O’Neill families and members of Carlow Co. GAA board.
Proceedings then moved outdoors to the entry to the new pitch which looked splendid in the early summer sunshine. MC Eamonn Byrne introduced Tinryland chairman Peenie Whelan and Co. board chairman Michael Meaney. The blessing of the new pitch by parish priest Fr Tom Little then followed before Liam O’Neill took to the podium to officially open the pitch and unveil the beautiful inscribed granite stone at the pitch entrance. The president was loud in his praise for the ongoing developments in the club.
Tinryland vice president and long serving former treasurer Tom Doyle then spoke about the changes he has witnessed at the club over a long time span. Tom together with Fr Little planted a remembrance tree in memory of deceased members of the club. The ceremony also included a presentation by Fighting Cocks chairman Finbarr O’Connor to Tinryland chairman Peenie Whelan. The Fighting Cocks were Tinryland’s guests at the opening and the subsequent division 1 match that followed between Tinryland and the Fighting Cocks was the first game played between the sides at senior level in over 70 years. Tinryland teams were very successful over the weekend with the seniors defeating Eire Og and Fighting Cocks while the juniors and U16 teams scored league wins over O’Hanrahans and Eire Og respectively.
