GAA News - Monday 14 Nov 2011

Mr. Tommy O'Neill

The entire parish was stunned on Wednesday last, November 9th when
news filtered through of the sudden and untimely death of Tommy O'Neill of
Staplestown. Tommy who was aged 63 years, was a legend in Tinryland
and Carlow GAA Circles and had achieved great renown on the playing
fields and later also as an administrator for many years. Tommy played
for the Tinryland club for many years and has five
county SFC medals won in 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979 and 1981. He held the record
for the highest score in a county final when he landed 1-07 in the
county final of 1972 when Tinryland beat Eire Og by 2-14 to 1-10.
Tommy was secretary of the Tinryland club for a number of years and
was elected county secretary in 1985 when he succeeded Jim O'Brien of
Carlow Town Hurling Club. He has served in the position for twenty-six
years up until the time of his death and is the longest serving county
secretary in the history of the GAA in Carlow. Despite his years of association with
Tinryland GFC, Tommy was always regarded as a fair and impartial official who gave
outstanding service to Gaelic Games in Carlow.

Tommy will be sadly missed by his wife Goretti (nee Moore) formerly of
Emo, Portlaoise, daughters Eimear and Grainne, son Shane, brother
Paddy, sister Mary, sons-in-law, Donal and Declan, brothers-in-law,
sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Removal took place from his residence on Friday to St. Joseph's
Church, Tinryland, Carlow to arrive for 7.30pm. Requiem Mass was held
on Saturday at 12noon with burial immediately afterwards in adjoining
cemetery.

Martin Murphy confirmed as Tinryland Senior
manager for 2012

Tinryland senior football manager Martin Murphy will continue in the
role for a third year. The Gracefield Co Offaly clubman recently
confirmed to the club that he is willing to stay on for another year and
try to guide the team to their first senior title since 1981.

After the great year the club had in 2011 there was speculation that
Martin might step down after the teams narrow defeat to Co champions Old
Leighlin in this years final.

With the average age of the team only 23 hopes are high that a senior
title will be won in the near future and many Tinryland supporters have
expressed their delight that Martin will be guiding the team once again
in 2012.

The Tinryland Juvenile GFC presentation evening will be held on this
Friday evening commencing at 6 30 p.m. in the clubhouse. During 2011
Tinryland underage teams won the Co. U16 championship and finished
runners up in the Co. U14 championship.
