Athletics News - Sunday 23 Jan 2011

Athletics

Congratulations are extended to Mary Ann O'Sullivan on a fantastic
victory in the All Ireland Girls Under 19 Cross Country Championships
in Tullamore Co.Offaly on Sunday last. Mary Ann, a Leaving Certificate
Student in Gaelcholaiste Ceatharlach, was hugely impressive throughout
and ran extremely well to hold off Irish Junior International Mary
Mulhare of North Laois (2nd) and Niamh Denny of Dundrum South Dublin
(3rd). This continues a fine start to 2011 for Mary Ann, who had only
won the Leinster Junior Cross Country Title a week previously.

Also winning honours was Deirdre Doyle who won the Carlow award in the
Leinster Sports Star Awards and was also a winner of a Nationalist
Quarterly Sportsperson award. Deirdre, who is currently on a
scholarship in DCU, won both the Leinster Novice and Intermediate
Titles last year and was a fine winner of the Carlow Cross Country
Title at the start of the month.

Leinster Title for Mary Ann

Tinryland Athlete Mary Ann O'Sullivan ran a fantastic race to take the gold medal in the
Leinster Junior Womens Cross Country Championship in Kilmacow Co.Kilkenny last weekend.
Mary Ann was always in control of the event and was a convincing winner ahead of nearest
challengers Shauna Moore, Dunshaughlin 2nd and Megan Morrissey, Thomastown 3rd.

Also in fine form over the weekend was recent Carlow CC Bronze medal winner Tommy Payne
who was an excellent 8th in the South Dublin County Council BHAA Cross Country in
Tallaght with his son Colin closely behind in 12th place in an event where over 260
athletes participated.
