Byrne Wins 10th Carlow Cross Country

Pat Byrne was once again in fine form as he won is 10th consecutive Carlow Cross Country Title with another fine individual perfromance in Tinryland on Sunday last. In the absence of kevin Lawlor of LOT, Byrne was always fancied to once again hold on to his crown and did not disappoint on the day. Having formed part of a three man break away group along with brian Kirwan and clubmate Dwayne Farrell, Byrne broke clear on the 2nd lap and soon established a 100m lead which he was to hold on to until the end of the 10km course. The Royal Oak native and Army Sergeant had been unwell of late and suffered poor form but following this display, hopes are high that he will lead Tinryland to further success at local and national level in the coming year. He will also aim for the individual title at the forthcoming National Masters Cross Country Championships. Byrnes winning time of 29 mins 43 was over 30 seconds clear of runner up Kirwan with Farrell taking bronze just ahead of the fast finishing Tommy Payne. Carlow Novice Champion Mick Kehoe was the next local athlete home in 6th with the outstanding 58 year old John Joe Murphy, who first competed in these championships as a teenager in 1966, taking 7th after holding off PJ Byrne 8th, Jerry O'Sullivan 9th and Eddie Walsh 10th. Former Carlow Novice Champion Billy Abbey also ran a good overall race on the day, finishing 13th. With LOT having a number of athletes absent on the day, Tinryland easily won their 27th Carlow Team title and the Odlum Cup.

In the Senior Womens 3km, the O'Sullivan sisters Mary Ann and Muireann both ran excellent races in the large field to win the silver and bronze medals respectively. Mary Ann continued her fine recent form at underage level to the Senior Stage and closely challenged eventual winner Eilish Connery for much of the race only to lose out in the last lap. Muireann, who was also running her first Carlow Senior Championships ran a fine race, showing much promise by holding off Pamela O'Donoghue, Brid Long and Fiona Purcell to take the bronze medal.
Unfortunately due to the absence of Deirdre Doyle and other club athletes, Tinryland were unable to field a complete team on the day with LOT taking the team title.

There was much success for Tinryland in the juvenile relays earlier in the day with the club winning the Girls Under 10, 12 and 14 events along with the Boys Under 12 event, holding off the strong LOT teams on each occasion.
