This years Tinryland AC Autumn League commences tonight (Wednesday) with a 2 mile jog/run in the village commencing at 7 pm.
A 5k on Wed September 10th, finishing with a 4 mile on September 17th will complete the league programme. Fun runners, walkers, and clubs with teams of 3 are invited to participate. There will be prizes in all the individual and team categories and for those who complete all stages in the league. The Annual Rockford Race/Fun run will now be held on Sunday Sept. 28th at 2 pm. The league has grown from strength to strength in recent years with participants coming from all over the Leinster Region and is now the main fixture on the local athletics calendar.
Marcus the new Bolt
13 year old Marcus Lawlor from Rathcrogue became the Carlow version of Usain Bolt with a great double at the National Community Games finals in Mosney at the weekend. Marcus, who is the National champion at 100 and 200m in his age group, won the u14 100m in style. Shortly afterwards he anchored his Bennekerry/Tinryland team of Cian Lawler, Gavin Curran, Conor O'Brien, Adam Murphy and Diarmaid Walshe to relay gold. B/T u12 boys team also reached the final, and were unlucky not to take bronze. The team was Niall Lowry, Fionnan Burke, Brian O'Mahoney, Sean Kirwan, Conor Crowley and Shane O'Neill. Sean Kirwan (boys u12 100m), Kate Doyle (marathon) also put in worthy performances. The games brought to conclusion the Mosney venue which has been used for the past 40 years. Local athletes, gymnasts, swimmers and draught players from area 11 will have memories of many successful weekends at the Meath venue. Next year's venue will be the IT College in Athlone.
