Doyle clinches Leinster bronze
TINRYLAND athlete Deirdre Doyle ran a fine race to take the bronze medal in the Leinster Junior Cross Country Championships in Tinryland on Sunday last. The new Carlow Senior Ladies CC Champion was always in contention from the start of the 3km event, having led for some time and was only edged out in the closing stages by the winner Jenny O’Sullivan of Raheny, Dublin with Suzanne Donivan of Kilkenny in 2nd position.
The Senior Mens 10km event was an exciting affair with local athlete Pat Byrne giving the home crowd much to cheer about by leading the field for the opening laps. However the day belonged to impressive KCH, Kilkenny athlete Brian Maher who quickly broke away from the field and recorded a fine victory ahead of former Irish Internationals Peter Matthews 2nd and John Downes 3rd with two time runner up Byrne settling for 4th place. Tommy Payne was the only other Tinryland athlete to complete the race, finishing in 21st position.
The programme began with very exciting programme of Juvenile relays. Tinryland had three teams in action on the day with the Girls U-14 team the best placed in 6th while the Girls U-12 team were 12th and the Boys U-12 team 13th in their respective events.
The next event on the calendar is the Four County League which commences in Tinryland on Sunday, February 25 at 2pm.
