Tinryland on Top in 4 County League
Tinryland AC lead the “A” Team section in the Four County League after the 1st stage in Tinryland on Sunday last.
Pat Byrne, fresh from competing with the Armed forces in Tunisia, produced one of his most convincing performances in this event in recent years with a comfortable win after breaking away from the 80 strong field at the very start.
The Carlow CC Champion gradually extended his lead over the 8 km course and was some 45 seconds clear of Tommy Evans of Gowran at the line with Colm Burke in 3rd position. National Masters Champion Tommy Payne once again had a fine showing in 5th place with Dwayne Farrell having a disappointing run by his own high standards in 11th. Without doubt the most outstanding display from a local athlete came from Eddie Walsh in 16th position. The Athy Road man, who has impressed in training of late, moved up through the field to record his best ever finish in this event and just managed to hold off JJ Murphy who was a place behind in 17th.
The other Tinryland athletes competing on the day were Joe Doheny 31st, John Maye 38th, PJ Doyle 50th, John Stephens 52nd and Kevin Cuddy 69th.
In the Ladies 3 km race, youngster Deirdre Doyle had an excellent run to finish 4th in what was a very competitive field.
Tinryland with a total of 33 points, have a narrow 3 point lead over SBR in the team section.
The second stage will take place in Ferns Co. Wexford on Sunday March 26th starting at 2 pm.
