THERE were once again some fine performances from Tinryland athletes in the 3rd stage of the Four County League in Gowran Co. Kilkenny on Sunday last. Pat Byrne (who ran the BUPA 10km race the day before) had a great run to record his 3rd consecutive victory holding off the challenge of Brian Maher of Kilkenny City Harriers. Eddie O’Neill ran his best race of the year to finish 4th ahead of the impressive Dwayne Farrell in 5th. Tommy Payne 6th and PJ Byrne 8th were the other Tinryland finishers in the top 10. There was a good turnout from club athletes with JJ Murphy 42nd, PJ Doyle 46th, John Maye 49th, Jim Morgan 57th, Michael Hade 62nd, Sean Duggan 72nd, Sean Doyle 73rd and Kevin Cuddy 77th.
Tinryland have a strong lead in the A team section on 57 pts ahead of SBR on 184 and Ballyfin on 325. Tinryland are 2nd in the C section, 100 pts behind SBR and lead the Veterans team event. Tommy Payne leads the Veterans over 45 category with JJ Murphy leading the over 50 section ahead of Jim Morgan. The final stage takes place in Tolerton Co. Laois on Friday April 22nd.
Pat Byrne had a fine run to finish 11th in the BUPA 10km in Phoenix Park on Saturday out of a field of over 5,000. Pat, who was also 2nd Irishman home behind Olympian Mark Carroll ran a fine time of 31 mins 21 seconds.
