Irish Olympian Breaks Course Record In Rockford Race

Gerry Ryan of Galway City Harriers was a very impressive winner of the 25th Annual Dan Morrissey sponsored Rockford Rooftile Race in Tinryland on Sunday last. Ryan, who was runner up in this race on a number of previous occasions, stamped his authority on the 150 strong field from the start and broke away at the start with a small group also consisting of former winner Noel Berkeley of Dundrum South Dublin, Tommy Evans of Gowran, local athlete Pat Byrne and last year’s winner Gearoid O’Connor of Rathfarnham. At the 1-mile mark, Ryan held off the challenge of Berkeley to win the dash for cash prize and the Galway man never looked back and gradually extended his lead towards the finish to take the title after many close attempts in recent years. Ryans winning time was 19 minutes 27 seconds with Berkeley 2nd in 19 minutes 43 with former US College Star Evans 3rd in 19 mins 50. Pat Byrne ran another fine race to finish 4th in 19 mins 56 with Colm Burke 5th in 20 mins 01 and former winner Peter Matthews 6th in 20 mins 09. The Veteran Mens over 40 section was won by Pat Malone of Newbridge in 21 mins 36 with John Donegan of Tullamore 2nd in 21 mins 53 and Liam Dunne also of Tullamore 2nd in 21 mins 54. Tommy Payne had another outstanding to win the over 45 event in 21 mins 13 and was also the first veteran home in the race. Martin McDonald of North Laois was 2nd in this category in 21 mins 51 with Martin Carroll of Tullamore 3rd in 21 mins 59. The over 50 section was won by JJ Murphy of Tinryland in 23 mins 11 with brother Peter having an outstanding race to win the over 55 event in 22 mins 28. The Junior Mens category was won by Niall Sheehan of Gowran in 21 mins 39, 10 seconds ahead of Tommy Levingston of SBR, Wexford. The team event was won by Tinryland on 58 pts ahead of Gowran on 82 pts and Tullamore on 106.
In the womens race, the presence of Irish Olympic Representative Maria McCambridge of Dundrum South Dublin ensured that the course record set by Catherina McKiernan last year was going to be under threat. The Dundrum athlete, ran in the 5000m in Athens, did not disappoint and went on to easily win the title and set a new course record of 21 mins 20 seconds. This was an exceptional run by McCambridge who was the 14th athlete overall to cross the line. In 2nd position was former winner Pauline Curley of Tullamore in 22 mins 02 with Eimear Martin of Sportsworld 3rd in 23 mins 32. In 4th was another former winner Ann Carroll of Tullamore in 24 mins 20 just ahead of Sinead Cummins of St Josephs in 5th and Jackie Carthy of Kilmore in 6th. The womens over 35 section was won by Tara Murphy of Sportsworld with Ann Carroll and Geraldine Carragher of Sportsworld winning the over 40 and 45 categories respectively. The womens team event was won by Tullamore with Sportsworld 2nd.
Despite the presence of some top Irish athletes in the race, the star attraction last Sunday was undoubtly Oscar Winning Actor Daniel Day Lewis. Competing for Parnells AC of Rathdrum, Lewis, known for his dedication for his film roles, also showed what a fine athlete he is and ran a very good time of 23 mins 34 seconds for the 4.2 mile course, finishing 57th overall. The very large crowds on the day were definitely swelled when word of his participation became known before the race.
There was a festive atmosphere on the course on Sunday with a drummer, a pipe band and music at various stages on the course together with the O’Donoghue School of Dancers at the finish line.
All athletes who took part received a special goody bag and a commemorative t-shirt. The prizegiving and showing of the race video took place afterwards in Tinryland GAA Centre, Rathcrogue.
Tinryland AC would like to thank Dan Morrissey Ireland for their continued sponsorship of the race, Tinryland GAA Club, the Killeshin Pipe Band, the O’Donoghue School of Dancing and the following who contributed to the goody bags: Braun Ireland, Irish Sugar, Seerys Cakes, Hoseys Fruit and Veg, Irish Defence Forces, Sunshine Juice and Jim Deanes Shop.
