Athletics News - Wednesday 1 Sep 2004

There was a very large turnout of 75 runners and walkers for the 1st stage of the Tinryland AC Autumn League sponsored by Jason Farrell Sports on Wednesday last. The 2 mile race was keenly contested throughout with Gowran clubmates Robbie McGee and Tommy Evans breaking away at an early stage followed by local star Tommy Payne and Brian Kirwan of LOT. In the closing stages, Evans, who had recently returned from a scholarship at an American University, made his decisive break and went on to win in a very good time of 9 mins 40 seconds, 13 seconds ahead of clubmate McGee. In 3rd place in 9 mins 56 was the outstanding Payne with fellow Veteran Pat Malone of Newbridge close behind in 4th position. In 5th in 10 mins 2 secs was Kirwan with Andrew Connick of St. Pauls, Wexford 6th. Local athletes to run well were Willie Quinlan 11th, PJ Byrne who continued his return to form in 12th and Jeremiah O’Sullivan 14th. There was a very high standard on the night with 23 competitors breaking 11 minutes for 2 miles. The ladies section was won by Barbara Rossiter of KCH in 12 mins 40 with Eileen Kelly of St Abbans 2nd in 13 mins 07 and Peggy Browne of KCH 3rd in 13 mins 28.
