Weekly News Roundup - Sunday 12 Apr 2009
Tinryland Variety Group had two very successful outings to Taghmon in Co.
Wexford recently for the South East Tops Competition. After some months of
preparation, the group staged their show with great professionalism and
were tipped for the final. Unfortunately the group did not make it into
the final, losing out to teams from Kilmore and Taghmon. Kilmore emerged
as the overall winners of the competition and this was well deserved. The
show was produced by the team of Madeline Doyle, Michelle Hutton and
Robert Ó Néill who attended the final where Tinryland was awarded 'Best
Heritage Scene' for their portrayal of 'The Children of Lir'. The group
followed this success with Shóna Lanigan winning the 'Best Female Singer'
award. Shóna also won the X Factor fundraiser which was held in Tinryland
in January. The variety group will take to the stage once more in Tullow
on Wednesday 22nd April for the heats of the Carlow Tops competition.
Tinryland were overall winners of this competition last year, also picking
up an award for our heritage scene 'The Fairy Glen', and an adjudicators
award for the standard of singing in the group. Many successes have been
enjoyed recently by members of Tinryland Variety Group. Shóna Lanigan was
chosen to play the part of Eponine in the Watergate production of 'Les
Miserables', receiving great acclaim for her portrayal of the role.
Michelle Hutton also featured on RTE/Mind the Gap's show 'An Bhfuil Cead
Agam', which was aired throughout seachtain na gaeilge. The group
continues to grow, now in its fifth year and with a bigger cast than ever
before. The members of the group are extremely grateful to have the use of
Tinryland GFC for all the rehearsals and fundraising. County Carlow VEC
has just awarded a grant of 1000 toward funding the group for the
voluntary work carried out with young people in the area. This money will
go toward financing some much needed equipment for thegroup in the coming
year. Anybody interested in attending the Carlow Tops can contact members
of the variety group.
