Girls basketball team take another county title
THE Bennekerry --Tinryland Girls U-16 basketball team retained their Carlow Community Games Title in fine style with a 28 points to 13 win over Borris in the decider in St. Leo’s Sports Hall on Thursday last.
After a closely contested opening half which saw the Area 11 team hold a narrow 12 pts to 9 lead, the holders showed their class with some fine scores after the break and the win was never in doubt.
Top scorer for B/T on the night was Deirdre Doyle who scored half her teams tally with a total of 14 points while scores also came from Aisling Kinsella 4, Amanda Cassidy 4, Ciara Smyth 4 and Ciara Butler 2.
The other team members were Jamie Lee Doyle, Samantha Sheehy, Orla Canning and Rebecca Nolan.
This team will now hope to emulate the achievements of last years Under 16 side that reached the Leinster semi-finals.
They will face opposition from Wexford in the Leinster Competition in the coming months.
FOUR COUNTY LEAGUE: The second stage of the Four County League will take place in Ferns Co. Wexford on Sunday next, March 26 starting at 1 pm.
Tinryland with a total of 33 points, have a narrow 3 point lead over SBR in the team section and will be hoping to increase this lead before the 3rd stage in Gowran on Easter Sunday. Pat Byrne is also leading the individual section.
COMMUNITY GAMES: Athletics training for Bennekerry/ Tinryland Community Games will resume on Tuesday, March 28 in Tinryland Parochial Fields at 7 pm.
Training sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7 and 8 pm for the coming months.
All cards for the Community Games Draw should be returned by Friday, March 24 at the latest.
Two teams from Bennekerry and Tinryland will take part in the Carlow Community Games Table Quiz in the Presentation College on Friday.
Draughts training for Area 11 in this years Community Games competition for the U-10, 12 and 14 age groups has commenced and takes place in Bennekerry NS on Wednesdays between 7 pm and 8 pm.
