The Ups eliminated in You’re a Star
LOCAL group “The Ups” were one of two acts who were eliminated in the RTÉ “You’re a Star” Competition on last Sunday’s show in the Helix, DCU after a fine live performance.
The duo consisting of Debbie Kelly, Linkardstown and Justin Kelly, Carlow were widely praised by the panel for their improved showing on the previous week and it was a big surprise that they eventually lost out along with young Wicklow singer Ruairi Quinn after the large support they had received throughout the competition. The panel of judges had also not predicted their exit from the show at this stage.
Despite the unexpected elimination, overall it was an excellent achievement to progress so far in a nationwide televised competition of this scale, which will hopefully lead to a bright future for the group.
TINRYLAND’S X FACTOR:
The search for Tinryland’s very own star with the X Factor is on, as Tinryland Variety Group is hosting a special fundraising night in the Clubhouse on Friday, February 24. The three judges for the event are some local well-known celebrities. Acting as mentors and judges on the night are Seán Byrne, Josie Kelly and Paddy Delaney. Over the next few weeks, each judge will pick and coach three acts.
The audience on the night will choose the eventual winner. However, there are some twists planned for the event. Tickets are •5 and are now available in Jim Deane’s shop, the clubhouse, or from members of the variety group and a great night is ensured.
The Variety Group is currently recruiting new members with both young and old welcome. Practices are each Tuesday at 8.00pm in the Clubhouse. We would appreciate all singers, dancers, actors, and backstage crew for this year’s show in April or May. Anybody interested can contact Robert O’Neill on 0863501699.
There will be a parachute jump in aid of Tinryland National School and Senior Citizens group in the coming weeks. Jumpers and sponsors are sought for this fundraising event. All donations are welcome.
Sponsorship cards are available from Margaret in the School Office or from any member of the Parent’s committee: Mick Byrne at 086-3994185, Barbara Nolan at 087-6464802 or Caroline Farrell at 086-3103680. All support would be greatly appreciated.
There were some medal winning performances by Tinryland athletes at the Leinster Indoor Athletics Championships in Nenagh over the weekend. Deirdre Doyle took gold in the Girls under 17 1500m while Philip Condron was 3rd in the Boys under 18 200m. Others to perform well were Christopher Costello, Kate Morgan and Patrick Mullins.
The star of the day was probably coach Jim Morgan who showed his potential as a decathlete with a double gold in the masters men over 50 200m and shot putt.
