Tinryland

Parish Priest Steps Down

There was much regret among parishioners when Fr. Peter Dunne, Parish Priest for the past 13 years, announced his resignation on health grounds over the weekend. Fr. Dunne, since moving to Tinryland in 1989, became very well respected in the parish for his pastoral and caring ministry. He had a keen passion for GAA where he served as Chairman of the local club. He also had an interest in athletics and especially the large cross country events, which were held on the parish grounds over the years. He enjoyed farming while in Tinryland and attended daily to his other "flock". He acted as Chaplain to the Holy Angels in Carlow. A native of Shanahoe, Abbeyleix, he was ordained in 1960 and went on to serve as a curate in Clonegal, Portarlington and Killeigh Co. Offaly and was appointed A.D.M in Tullow in 1984 before coming to Tinryland. In a message to parishioners on the church newsletter, he expressed his gratitude for their kindness, support and prayers during his time in Tinryland and hoped to speak to people personally later. He also went on to extend a very sincere welcome to his successor Fr. John McEvoy, who will take up his duties on August 30th. Fr. McEvoy, a native of Ballyroan Co. Laois is presently bursar of St. Patrick's College, Carlow and also performs weekend duties in Rath Co. Laois.

Minors Lose League Semi

Tinryland Minor Footballers lost out to Michael Davitt's by 0-12 to 1-8 after a close fought match in the Eire Og Grounds on Sunday last. Tinryland started off strongly and led by 1-7 to 0-5 at the break. However the second period was an entirely different matter with Michael Davitt's restricting Tinryland to just one point and their 2nd half domination saw them eventually win by the narrow margin.
Best for Tinryland were Alan Barrett who scored 1-7, John Paul Moore, Padraig Minnock, Mark Doran, Shane O'Neill and Mark Dempsey.
