Area 11 provided five individual winners in the Co. Community Games finals held in Bagenalstown on Saturday.
It was a fitting success for the efforts put in by the swimmers, instructors and parents in the sport over many morning trips to the pool. The backstroke is certainly a speciality for the Doyle sisters of Rutland with Deirdre winning the U: 10 event while her older sister Karen also struck gold in the U:14 event. The athleticism and availability of swimming pools in the Wigan area of England proved successful for the Murphy family of Park with Laura a brilliant winner the butterfly event Girls U:12 while her brother Michael was successful in the backstroke boy’s U:10. Elizabeth Gaule, Clocristic was a fine winner in the 400 m. U:12 Breastroke. The girls U:13 squad of Niamh Daly, SinČad Byrne, Rosalind Deane, Elizabeth Gaule and Karen Doyle finished in silver position with Patrick Byrne, Linkardstown winning bronze in the boys u-10 Freestyle.
Sympathy: Sympathy is extended to Noel Shortt, Rathcrogue on the death of his father Joseph who died last week in Rathdowney Co. Laois.

Boys U-10 team in semi-finals: Area 11 boys u-10 team are through to the Leinster semi-finals thanks to two fine wins over Muckalee (Kilkenny) and Camross-Taghmon recently while the game against Muckalee gave the team an easy win on a score of 5-3 to 2-2 the game against the Wexford Champs proved a tough dour struggle. The game was played in Rathcrogue on Sunday morning. The local team lead at halftime by a score of 0-4 to 0-2. Scoring was at a premium in the second half with the home team coming out on top on score of 0-6 to 0-3. Starring for Bennekerry/Tinryland were Colm Nolan(Goals),Brian Parker (Midfield) and Michael Murphy . Scorers were Padraic Whelan 0-2, Brian Parker 0-2, Jeff Sutton 0-1 and Cormac Welsh 0-1. The Leinster semi-finals and finals will be held at the Carlow Hurling club on Saturday July 17th. Area 11 will play Wicklow in the semi-final.
U-16 success: Tinryland u-16 footballers guaranteed themselves a place in the Co. B semi-final thanks to a 2-5 to 1-7 win over a fancied Fenagh side. The team had fine players in goals Padraic Minnock and full back John Whyte. The goal scorers were Cian Moore and James O’Reilly. The under 14 team remain unbeaten and are now through to the A. Semi-finals. In their last game they defeated Bagenalstown away on a score of 1-8 to 0-7.
