The annual Kevin Jordan Memorial senior football tournament takes place in Rathcrogue on Sunday next, April 25th at 7 pm when Carlow play Wicklow. The match will be preceded by an U-14 football championship match between Tinryland and Michael Davitt’s at 5.15 pm.
Both Carlow and Wicklow will play with full strength teams as they prepare for the forthcoming championships. Carlow will meet Westmeath in Dr.Cullen Park on May 9th in the 1st round of the championship. Last year’s tournament produced a very exciting draw with Wicklow winning the replay. The tournament is sponsored by Farrell Construction and the match referee is former All Ireland Final referee Tommy Howard of Kildare.
The Dan Morrissey Tournament resumes shortly with Eire Og, Stradbally, Baltinglass and Palatine all taking part in this year’s competition.
Wedding: The wedding took place in St.Lazerian’s Church, Drumphea on Easter Monday of Una Kelly, daughter of Brendan and Bridget Kelly, Booldorragh, Fenagh and Paddy Nolan, son of Alice and the late Patrick Nolan, Hobartstown, Castledermot. The Celebrant was Rev. John Hayden, Retd. PP of Myshall assisted by Rev. Philip O’Shea PP Myshall and Rev.Patrick Daly PP Bennekerry. The best man was JJ Power, Caragh Co.Kildare and the bridesmaid was Sinead Kelly, sister of the bride. The reception was held in the Riverside Hotel, Enniscorthy. Una works as a remedial teacher in Tinryland and Bennekerry schools.
REHAB COLLECTION: The annual church gate collection in aid of Rehab Group takes place at all Masses throughout the county on Saturday and Sunday, April 24/25.
The Carlow Centre provides training in garment making, engineering, picture framing and general industrial work for over sixty people with special needs. It is the intention of the Rehab Group to place as many people as possible in open employment. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
Enrolment for ’99: Parents wishing to enrol pupils in Tinryland NS for September 1999 should do so by Friday April 30th. You are invited to call with your child to Mrs. Foster between 2 and 3 pm from Wednesday April 21st to Friday April 30th. For further information please ring Margaret at 32156.
MINOR Football: Tinryland minors recorded their 2nd victory in the MFL with a fine 2-8 to 0-7 win over MLR recently. Pierce McCarthy and Michael Moore were the goalscorers in a match played in miserable conditions. Others to shine for Tinryland were John Doyle, Willie Power, Barry McDaniel and Christopher Cleary. The team now has a chance of reaching the play-offs.
Pilgrimage: The Padre Pio National Pilgrimage which coincides with the beatification of Padre Pio in Rome on the same day, takes place to Holycross Abbey on Sunday May 2nd. For further information please contact Eithne Ryan 22004 or Edward Dawson at 59109.
Athletics: The Tinryland U9 Relay team of Darren Murphy, Conor Byrne, Christopher Costello and Joey Ryan won the relay event in the St.Abban’s Sports which were held last Sunday. Darren Murphy also won the U8 80m event.
Ann Brennan 3rd V4, Etta Doyle, Seamus Connolly and PJ Doyle all took part in the Sportsworld 5 mile classic which was held in Walkinstown on Sunday last.
The final leg of the 4 County League takes place in Tolerton, Co.Laois on Friday next at 7.15 pm. The senior team are just 4 pts behind St. Senan’s in the overall standings and will be hoping to reclaim the title.
Training for Area 11 Community Games continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the Tinryland parochial fields at 7 pm.
Community Games: Area 11 U-14 quiz team beat 25 other teams to represent Carlow in Mosney at the skills weekend to be held on May 22 and 23. The team finished on 76 pts ahead of Hacketstown and Graiguecullen. The team was Doireann Burke, Colm Cushen, Peter Hennessey and Philip Mullins.
The Boys U-13 indoor soccer team will play Rathvilly in the County semi-final in Hacketstown on Sunday evening next at 7.15 pm while the make and model competition will be held in the Presentation College, Carlow on the same day at 2 pm.
The girls U12 football team will play their semi-final against Bagenalstown in Tinryland this week.
